Hedrick Advances in Morehead and National Merit Competition by Eloise Odom Jason Hedrick, a senior at AHS, has been selected to advance in Morehead comp>etition and as a semifmalist in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Jason will compete in second round More head interviews on December 8 in Salisbury. The Morehead Scholarship is a prestigious and valu able award to UNC-Chapel Hill, covering most expenses and summer programs as well. National Merit Semifinalist recognition is based on overall PS AT scores and qualfies Jason for a number of scholarships. Jason's overall PSAT score was very impressive, including a perfect score of 800 on the verbal section of the test. Congratulations to Jason for his outstand ing efforts in achieving these awards. Parents...They're Everyw^here by Eloise Odom Are there some teachers you just can’t stand being around? Do you dread spen^g 55 mmutes in their class or do you have the time of your life? Well, for twenty-two students at A etf parmts sre some of the faculty members of AHS or the Central Office. They must put up with eir teac er parent in order to survive school and life at home. Life as a teacher s son or daughter as its P slong with its minuses. Sons and daughters of the school faculty ^ h.wlna their parentsatAH&i_ — by Kelly Rakes Another rain filled Friday night caused Homecoming to be postponed to Monday night, Octo ber 23. This clear evening the game and homecoming festivities proved to be a huge success. Our Bulldogs triumphantly defeated the Mt. Pleasant Tigers 43-21. At halftime, the homecoming sponsors were presented to background music of “Unchained Melody.” Junior court representa tives Danyel Bailey and Mika Rogers and senior court representatives Mary Jenkins and Deshanne Lilly all received roses and a sash. Homecoming queens Mandy Poston and Orayla Flake received tiaras and a chauffeured trip around the crack in aclassic 1957 Thunderbird. Senior class vice- president Mary Nance crowned the queens. Escorts for the evening were Stephen Anderson, Terris Green, Gary Her, and Grant Hopkins. Allison Hudson and Erin Mauldin were half-time program assistants and Katherine Garrison, Beth Hathcock, and Brandon Cooke assisted with props. The emcee was Mr. Moran and Mrs. Hedrick along with the chorus sang the national anthem. Homecoming decorations were all provided by the varsity cheerleaders and special guests were the JV cheerleaders. AHS congratulates the two queens, the football players, sponsors, escorts, and varsity cheer- leaders for a successful *95 Homecoming. M The homecoming court shows off their winning smiles. Off to Washington! By Kelly Rakes A handful of AHS Young National Scholars have been chosen for a leadership conference held in Washington, D.C. Eric Lowder has recently returned from this six day trip. Eric spent adayatCapitolHillandtheSmithsonian. He was also allowed to sit in on a Senate hearing. Eric also enjoyed a mock Congress, a Presidential crisis simulation, and a Supreme Court simula tion. He seemed to be excited and enjoyed the educational opportunities, but he seemed glad to get back to AP English and the simple life of AHS. Beth Hathcock and Katherine Garrison have commented that when they go on February 13, they are looking forward to a wonderful educa tional opportunity and increasing their leader ship skills. The students who attend this program stay for a total of six days. These students were chosen for their scholastic merit and leadership potential. The Congressional Youth Leadership Council encourages participation of young ex ceptional high school students. Some guest speakers will be George Bush, Dan Quayle, Janet Reno, Newt Gingrich; and Jesse Jackson, among others. AHS congratulates these students and wishes them well on their way to Washington, D.C. and a welcome back to Eric Lowder, who just returned home from this trip.
